Welcome to this week's edition of The Culture Dispatch!
This week, Manifesta 16 Ruhr is in full swing across Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, and Gelsenkirchen, transforming twelve former post-war church buildings into spaces for contemporary art and community. In New York, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot fills the Park Avenue Armory with sound generated entirely by ceramic bowls floating on water, and MoMA opens Architects of Liberation, examining modernist architecture across seven West African nations.
On the exhibitions side: Basquiat's Figures, Signs, Symbols opens at PAMM in Miami, Gustavo Nazareno at Opera Gallery in Paris, and Sara Sallam's Care. Reconsidering Photography continues in Hamburg.
On the opportunities side: Terra Foundation Conventions Grants worth up to $25,000, a Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship for artists and writers, the Fotografiska Emerging Open Call, and a film and moving arts festival in Portugal.
Walk Through the Exhibition FIRE with Natalya Stupka and Artist Talk with Mark Morris offers visitors an opportunity to experience FIRE. From the Cosmos to the Commons through a guided conversation that moves beyond the artworks on display.
Clinamen, a monumental site-specific installation by French artist, musician, and composer Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, marks the artist's return to New York with the largest iteration of the work ever realised, transforming the vast Wade Thompson Drill Hall into a living acoustic environment where sound is generated not by performers, but through the unpredictable movement of ordinary ceramic bowls floating on water.
Architects of Liberation: Modernism in Western Africa brings together the architecture of Benin, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo, examining a transformative chapter in architectural history, exploring how the built environment became a powerful expression of political independence, cultural identity, and collective ambition across West Africa from the late 1950s through the early 1980s.
(Closing Soon) The 2026 New Wight Biennial is an international group exhibition hosted by the New Wight Gallery at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). They are seeking artists currently engaged in advanced educational pursuits in art practice with works that explore fugitivity as a movement toward freedom, resistance, and transformation. Manifesta 16 Ruhr takes place from 21 June to 4 October 2026 across the Ruhr Area in Germany. Hosted in the cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen and Gelsenkirchen, the sixteenth edition of the European Nomadic biennial transforms twelve former post-war church buildings into spaces for contemporary art, dialogue, community engagement and collective imagination.
